This is a home remedy for colds, particularly in kids, and has long been used to treat respiratory illnesses.
Due to its high biological activity, honey can help clear mucus and cause violent coughing fits when applied topically. A honey-based wrap is a great remedy that can effectively get rid of a cough—literally—for one night. It is recommended for both adults and children.
Honey wrap – recipe
To prepare honey wrap you will need:
- honey
- flour
- vegetable oil
- gauze
- napkin
- Band-Aid adhesive tape
How to prepare:
Mix the flour with a small amount of honey, so you will get a mixture for the compress, which should not stick to your hands.Add a little vegetable oil and then roll it in some flour again.
Place the mixture on a napkin, and wrap in cheesecloth.
Attach it to the chest or back, using the plaster adhesive tape, and after that put on pajamas.
Please note that the wrap should not be placed all the way to the area of the heart, but the content of the coating should be slightly above.
Leave the compress on your child for 2-3 hours, best when when it’s sleeping, and adults can keep it the whole night. For adults, for enhanced effect, you can add a little mustard powder.
During this time it’s possible actively sweating, and that the bedding will get wet. So because of that you should put some more protection on the sheet.

When you can use honey wraps:
When coughing, honey wraps can be used in children older than 6 months. The child must not have skin diseases and injuries of the skin.
Note that the child hasn’t got allergies to bee products. You can check it out by putting a small amount of honey on the body of a child. If there is redness or swelling,it means that there is an allergic reaction, and in this case honey wraps are contraindicated. It is not recommendable if the temperature of the child is higher than 37 degrees.
