A 10-year-old rape victim, denied an abortion, gave birth in northern India Thursday.
She delivered a baby girl via Caesarian section at the Government Medical College and Hospital in Chandigarh, India. Both mother and child are in stable condition, and the baby weighed in at 5.5 pounds.
Under the country's Medical Termination of Pregnancy Act, India does not allow abortion after more than 20 weeks of pregnancy unless granted by the courts.
The girl's pregnancy was undiscovered until mid-July when she complained of stomach pains, according to the BBC. As a result of the girl's late stage in her pregnancy, India's Supreme Court denied the family's plea for an abortion.
The baby, born prematurely at 35 weeks, will remain in neo-natal intensive care for a few weeks before being put up for adoption.
The victim was allegedly raped by her uncle over a period of six to seven months. Charges against him are pending.
